Some of the cool reading that the study leans on (I should add more but I got lazy). Also, reading the originals is worth the time and most definitely better than my summaries.
- Iyengar, Sood and Lelkes, “Affect, Not Ideology” (2012). The paper that put affective polarization on the map as a thing you can measure separately from what people believe.
- Huddy, Mason and Aaroe, “Expressive Partisanship” (2015). Party as an identity you feel, not a position you hold. Where the identity strength measure comes from.
- Stanovich and West, “Reasoning independently of prior belief” (1997). The actively open-minded thinking scale, and the argument for why it is worth measuring at all.
- ANES. Decades of feeling thermometers, which is what makes a single new thermometer reading mean anything.
- David Eagleman, “Livewired” (2020). Popular science on plasticity. It is where I got the “the brain is shaped by what it is fed” framing, and I hold it as loosely as that sentence suggests.
